If you too would like to have a beautiful and attractive smile, you can consider dental composite veneers as one of the solutions for this matter.

But what is dental composite and what are its applications? Stay with us in this article from Dr. Bonyanian’s dental clinic to get more information on this subject.

Types of Dental Veneers

According to an article titled “Advances in dental veneers,” there are two types of veneers for teeth:

Composite Veneers

In terminology, the following are referred to as composite veneers: composite laminate – composite veneer – veneer – aesthetic composite. In clinical practice these are often called direct composite veneers or composite bonding veneers because the material is layered and bonded chairside.

Porcelain Veneers

These veneers are also called laminate, dental laminate, ceramic veneers, and so on.

Patients often compare composite veneers vs porcelain veneers for stain resistance, longevity and cost; we explain pros/cons below to help you choose confidently.

What is Dental Composite?

Dental composite is a paste-like, tooth-colored material used for restoring, beautifying, or reconstructing damaged parts of teeth.

This material hardens after being shaped on the tooth with a special light, giving the tooth a natural and beautiful appearance. Due to its excellent color matching and minimal tooth preparation requirement, composite is highly applicable in treatments such as filling cavities, correcting cracks, closing gaps between teeth, and smile design.

Various Applications of Dental Composite

  • Restoration of small and medium-sized cavities
  • Filling damaged teeth with a tooth-colored material
  • Rebuilding broken or cracked teeth
  • Correcting discoloration or surface stains on teeth
  • Closing gaps between teeth (space bonding / diastema closure bonding / composite bonding for gaps)
  • Correcting the shape and size of teeth for enhanced beauty
  • Covering sensitive root surfaces of teeth
  • Repairing minor tooth chips — composite veneers for chipped teeth
  • Refining worn or uneven edges — composite veneers for worn edges and composite veneers for uneven teeth
  • Managing papilla loss in select cases — composite veneers for black triangles (case-dependent)
  • Part of smile design and correcting the smile line (including edge bonding for incisal symmetry)
  • Temporary replacement for ceramic veneers in some cases

Who is Dental Composite Suitable For?

Individuals eligible for dental composite procedures are those who:

  • Have discolored teeth.
  • Face issues with gaps between their teeth.
  • Have broken or cracked teeth.
  • The height of their teeth is not uniform (their teeth are short and long).
  • Have slightly crooked or misaligned teeth.
  • And so on…

Additionally, candidates for dental composite should also possess other characteristics, including:

  • They practice good oral and dental hygiene.
  • They do not smoke (or are willing to reduce/quit to protect margins and color).
  • They do not grind their teeth (bruxism) — or will use a night guard if present.
  • The overall structure of their teeth is healthy and they do not require orthodontics.

Steps and Method for Performing Composite Veneer Procedure

If you are also a candidate for dental composite, it’s best to become familiar with the steps of the composite procedure. In this content prepared by Dr. Bonyanian’s dental clinic, we will acquaint you with the stages and method of dental composite.

1 – Consultation Session, Before Making a Decision

Usually, before starting any dental service (whether aesthetic or therapeutic), a consultation session is held with the patient and the specialist dentist. In this consultation session, various factors will be discussed.

For example, in a composite veneer consultation, the dentist will ask the candidate about their intention for undergoing this procedure, the condition of their teeth, medical history and previous problems, the desired composite color, and so on.

Addressing these questions will determine the suitability of composite veneers for the candidate. Also, if necessary, alternative and suggested solutions from the dentist will be presented to the individual.

2 – Choosing the Composite Brand

There are various companies and brands that offer composite materials to the market. You can choose your desired brand based on the budget you have set aside for your composite veneers.

The most famous brands producing dental composite material include Bisco, Coltene, DMG America, Kerr, Tokuyama Dental, Ivoclar (IPS), Cosmedent, 3M and SDI.

3 – Selecting the Composite Shade

To choose the most suitable composite shade, the dentist will show the patient a composite shade guide palette and provide necessary guidance. Ultimately, the patient will select their desired color based on personal preference and the specialist dentist’s recommendations.

Shade matching composite veneers involves value-first selection (brightness), then hue/chroma and customized translucency.

4 – Addressing Minor Dental Issues

The specialist dentist must address any minor dental issues before starting the composite procedure. Removing decay, possible root canal treatment, etc., are examples of these actions.

5 – Teeth Cleaning (Scaling)

Your teeth must be thoroughly clean and free of any plaque and tartar before composite placement. For this reason, the dentist will proceed with cleaning and scaling your teeth before starting the composite placement process.

6 – Etching the Tooth Surface

In the tooth surface etching stage, an acidic material, in gel or liquid form, is applied to the teeth using a syringe. This stage is painless and may only create a bitter taste in your mouth.

7 – Placing and Shaping the Composite

The composite layer applied to the tooth is very thin and delicate. Therefore, it is not necessary to shave the outer surface of the tooth to compensate for its thickness in suitable cases. Composite has a paste-like consistency and is bonded to the tooth surface with a special adhesive. Options such as no-prep composite veneers or minimal prep composite veneers may be possible depending on your case.

After placing the composite, the dentist applies the material to the tooth surface using a layering technique. This process continues until the dentist achieves the natural shape and color of the composite. For certain indications, edge bonding refines incisal outlines and symmetry.

8 – Polishing the Outer Surface of the Composite

After the composite material hardens on the tooth, the dentist polishes the composite surface to create a smooth, shiny surface and achieve the most natural appearance. Also, the composite candidate, after observing the placed composite, provides feedback to the dentist (so that if any specific change is needed, it can be applied at that time).

When case selection allows, same-day composite veneers can deliver immediate cosmetic enhancement.

Advantages of Dental Composite

  • Very high aesthetic appearance
  • Often no need for tooth preparation (grinding) — conservative and enamel-preserving
  • High speed of procedure completion (many cases in one visit)
  • Increased tooth strength and easy chairside repairs
  • More affordable price than laminate
  • Simpler repair in case of damage

Disadvantages of Composite Veneer Procedure

  • Possible gum irritation if margins are not well-finished; requires precise technique
  • Rare sensitivity or material intolerance
  • Chipping/wear if not properly protected (e.g., bruxism without a night guard)
  • May stain sooner than porcelain; requires periodic composite veneers polishing and proactive composite veneers maintenance

Material of Composite Veneer

Composite veneer is made of white resin with glass/ceramic fillers. The better the quality of the resin system and its polish retention, the longer you can enjoy your beautiful smile.

What is Removable Dental Composite?

Removable dental composite, also known as removable dental laminate (snap-on veneers), is one of the quick and practical solutions for people who:

  • Are looking for a beautiful smile.
  • The temporary nature of their teeth’s appearance is not important to them.
  • Are in a hurry to cover their dental imperfections.
  • Have a small budget for having a smooth and even smile.

Note: They are temporary covers and not a substitute for bonded veneers. Limitations include bulk, hygiene challenges and color stability.

How to Choose the Composite Shade

Dental composite comes in various shades, which are divided into 4 categories: A, B, C, and D. Each of these categories has different color groups.

To decide which composite shade is suitable for you and best matches your skin tone, you can get help from a free dental consultation at Dr. Bonyanian’s clinic.

Lifespan of Dental Composite

Dental composite lasts for an average period that depends on case selection, bite, habits and maintenance. With regular hygiene and professional polishing, composite veneers longevity improves considerably. Porcelain typically maintains color longer, but composites are repairable and refreshable.

Difference Between Composite Veneer and Porcelain Veneer

Both porcelain veneers and composite veneers are chosen to change the appearance of teeth. However, there are many differences between these two types of veneers.

  • The most important difference between the two is the extent to which they change the color of the teeth. In fact, porcelain veneers can mask darker discolorations more predictably than composite.
  • The strength and durability of composite veneers are less than porcelain, and they can chip/wear more easily. Composites, however, are usually repairable without full replacement.
  • Laminates are thinner and more delicate-looking than composites and offer high aesthetics; well-layered composites can also look very natural.
  • Most of the time, composite is chosen for minor corrections and can be applied very quickly.

Is Laminate Better or Composite?

As you know, both laminate and composite have their pros and cons. Composite veneer is done in just one session and saves time. This procedure is performed without damaging the tooth enamel or extracting it in many suitable cases.

Also, the cost of composite veneer is almost half that of laminate. It is worth mentioning that if a laminate cracks or breaks, it must be completely replaced, whereas this is not always the case with composite veneer.

Meanwhile, laminate is a very strong material with excellent long-term color stability. The best option depends on your goals, enamel thickness, bite and shade demands—decide together with a cosmetic dentist.

Types of Dental Composites by Structure and Their Differences

Composites differ from each other in terms of structure. Although the material of all of them is resin with glass/ceramic fillers; they differ in thickness, strength, and appearance. Below, we will get acquainted with the types of dental composites and their features.

Macrofill Composite

This type of composite is designed with larger particles (≈5–10 μm). It has good strength but lower long-term polish retention compared with modern systems.

Microfill Composite

This category was designed from colloidal silica with very small particles (~0.04 μm). It provides excellent long-term gloss; however, mechanical strength is lower and often combined with hybrids.

Bulk-Fill Composites

This category is designed for deeper curing and efficiency (often used as base or posterior restorations). Note: they are not a whitening method and not intended to “prevent food trapping.”

Nanofill Composite

The particles of this model have a size of about 20 to 70 nanometers, offering a balance of strength and polish retention; widely used for anterior aesthetics.

Staining of Dental Composite

Discoloration of composite veneers does not happen overnight or suddenly. Rather, it is the combination of several different factors that can lead to such a thing. For example:

  • With age, the gum line may recede and plaque retention increases.
  • Material quality and polish retention vary by brand/system.
  • Damage to teeth due to impact and pressure causes micro-wear and roughness.
  • Diet (high-pigment foods/drinks) and smoking.
  • If oral and dental hygiene is not observed, the color of the composite surface will change.

Does Composite Cause Teeth to Protrude?

Dental composite is an ideal option for correcting imperfections and gaps between teeth. Dentists, relying on their knowledge and skills, cover dental defects in the best way possible and place a thin layer of composite veneer on the tooth. Therefore, if the dentist is skilled and experienced, you will not witness teeth protruding. Selective enamel shaping may be done to avoid bulk and refine contours.

Composite Veneers Aftercare & Maintenance

Composite veneers aftercare focuses on gentle hygiene, gloss-preserving products and regular professional care. Key tips for composite veneers maintenance:

  • Brush twice daily; use interdental cleaning. Prefer non-abrasive toothpaste to preserve gloss.
  • Avoid biting hard objects on incisal edges (ice, nutshells, pens).
  • Consider a night guard if you clench/grind.
  • Schedule hygiene + composite veneers polishing every 6 months (or as advised).
  • For color care, limit high-pigment foods/drinks immediately after finishing; maintenance whitening can be discussed.

Composite Veneers Before and After

Realistic composite veneers before and after cases show improvements in color, symmetry and edge definition. Outcomes vary by case, habits and maintenance.

We also provide composite bonding Tehran by an experienced composite bonding dentist Tehran for diastema closure and edge refinement.

Final Conclusion

In this content prepared by Dr. Bonyanian’s dental clinic, we reviewed dental composite, its advantages, disadvantages, and types. We learned that this material, in addition to its application for filling teeth, also helps to enhance the beauty of teeth.

By being placed on crooked, misaligned, short, long, and damaged teeth, composite veneer can conservatively mask imperfections and give you a beautiful and shiny smile.
